The mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cells. They can be destroyed by a variety of stressors during the course of one’s life.
The resultant lack of energy not only leads to fatigue and lethargy, but also to the development of many chronic illnesses.
According to the latest research results, the disturbance of mitochondrial function also plays a decisive role in the emergence of cancer.
Each cell has several thousand mitochondria. Their function is to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cells’ universal and immediately available energy carrier. A healthy person weighing 70 kg produces 70 kg of ATP per day!
In addition to congenital mitochondriopathies that can already lead to serious illnesses during childhood, mitochondrial dysfunctions can also emerge during the course of one’s life. These can be caused by a number of noxious agents, e.g. by environmental pollutants (including heavy metals), antibiotics, chemotherapies, bacteria (e.g. borrelia, mycoplasma, chlamydia), viruses (e.g. the Ebstein Barr virus or other herpes viruses).
Mitochondria have their own DNA (genetic information) called mtDNA. Unlike the DNA in the cell nuclei, mitochondrial DNA has no repair mechanisms. This means that there are frequent mutations in the mtDNA that cause functional damage during the course of a lifetime. Because mitochondria do not die off, they remain in the cells even if their function has been impaired.
Among other things, damage to the mitochondria can lead to disturbances in the respiratory chain and thus to the formation of oxygen radicals. These cause further damage to the mitochondria: a vicious circle that leads to a continuous deterioration of mitochondrial function. Insufficient cellular energy is the consequence. This is one cause of chronic illnesses and makes them worse, because many metabolic and repair processes can no longer function fully due to the provision of insufficient energy.
